Programme of Exhibitions 2008

This year celebrating 31 years of unequalled services to the

Arts in Brent....a proud record!

24th January – 17th February

ELEANOR WRIGHT – “There are more things”

Site specific installation of constructed environments that are compiled of both made and found objects. The work’s construction acts as a labyrinthine path, which indicates a solitary journey for the viewer.

21st February – 16th March

JOSEPH STEWART – "Symbiosis”

Watercolour and ink on paper featuring varied combinations of repeatedly scrawled text. Human figures and the image of the wild animal to bring to mind universal human concepts of freedom, power, beauty and mortality.

27th March – 20th April

MARIA ALVAREZ ECHENIQUE – “Dreams in a grain of sand”

New and powerful ceramic sculptures imbued with the personalities of the poets Gilgamesh, Blake, Dante and Neruda. The work is alive with the expressive power of the imagination which confronts nature and our responsibility to the environment.

24th April – 18th May

JIN KIM – “Margin”

These dramatic paintings incorporate images of public spaces and figurative elements to transform familiar spaces using dynamic colour and linear brushstrokes. These produce an exciting layered image on the canvas.

22nd May – 15th June

WEMBLEY ART SOCIETY

The sixteenth exhibition at the Stables of watercolours, drawings, oils and mixed media work by this long established local arts society.

19th June – 13th July

SUSAN EYRE   - “Resticted view”

Staged environments which represent the natural world glimpsed within the urban landscape. The creation of green spaces fulfils a desire for retreat to a shared fantasy which is ours to manipulate.

17th July – 10th August

MELANIE O’ROURKE

These paintings explore everyday scenes of unnoticed and bypassed spaces. The work is derived from what exists in our peripheral vision and explores a wavering relationship between desirability and disposability.

14th August – 7th September

DOLLIS HILL ART GROUP

Annual summer show of watercolours, oils and mixed media works by this local arts group based here at the Stables Art Centre.

18th September – 12th October

JANSI KIM

Using original photographic images which are re-touched with colour, the artist produces nostalgic paintings of dwellings which suggest and invite entry but also subtly indicate concealment and closure.

16th October – 9th November

PETER HARRISON – “Northern light”

Paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolour which reveal the rich colour and special light of the Inishowen area of Donegal concentrating on the relationship of sea, sky and earth.

13th November – 7th December

NICOLA McCARTNEY

Employing strong colour and decorative elements, the women portrayed in these paintings are abstracted from everyday life. Each is presented as independent, but together they become a powerful collective.

"The Stables" is a converted and re-furbished stable block and the gallery, which is situated in the stables, still retains many of its original features including the wooden stalls and feeding troughs, thus making it an interesting and unique venue in which to stage art exhibitions.

There is also the "The Hayloft", a large room for hire on the first floor, above the gallery, overlooking the park and beautifull walled garden, suitable for meetings, presentations, lectures and rehearsals etc.

The Stables is a tremendous asset to have in the park, not only for its arts programme but as a centre for use by the community. The GPCC hold their meetings at the Stables in the Hayloft and The Madhatters Theatre Club use it for their rehearsals on a regular basis.

The Brent Camera Club meets at the Stables using both the Hayloft and darkroom facilities that are available. Anyone at any level of photography is welcome to join, for more detailed information of the club and its meetings contact Mark Cummins on 020 8964 0423.

For full details on hiring The Hayloft please use the contact details listed above.
