Sportsground improvements in Gladstone Park

19 June 2008

Works to improve the drainage and sports pitches in the southern part of Gladstone Park (south of the railway line) commenced in early November 2007.  During the winter the topsoil was conserved and stockpiled, and the main pitch areas were re-graded and levelled.  Recently, new drainage was installed; and the topsoil replaced. Sanding work is currently in progress; the seed beds will then be prepared and the pitches will be seeded.  During the works some multi-media cabling serving a wide area around Gladstone Park was uncovered: this had been installed on an unauthorised route and had to be dropped to a lower depth to avoid damage.  Some sewerage inspection chambers, serving an area to the east and north of Gladstone Park , were also lowered.

If weather conditions during the summer are conducive to grass and turf establishment the pitches could be available for use starting in late September 2008.  If so, the safety and protective fencing will be removed at that time.  If not, the fencing will be removed as soon as practicable.  The sports pavilion will come into use at the same time.  In the meantime, if you need grass to play upon, please use the main part of Gladstone Park .  Once in use, pitches will be available for team games; and for informal and general park use at all other times.

For your safety and to facilitate the works please keep to the paths and un-fenced areas during the works.

The project was approached by aiming to maximise the area of pitch space available which would provide the maximum potential to meet changing demand in the future, for example by changes to the line marking.

As an indication, going from east to west, the area could accommodate a Gaelic football/rugby pitch (area D); two full-sized football pitches (area C) with an artificial cricket wicket in between - the football pitches becoming the cricket outfield in the summer and/or a combination of cricket, junior and mini football and a 100 metre marked running track for primary school sports etc, two junior and/or mini football pitches south of the hard-standing courts (area B) and space for mini-football and/or touch rugby towards the western apex (area A). A training area south of the railway and to the left of the Rickyard could also be accommodated. All of these options are still to be decided depending on demand.

The Gladstone Park Consultative Committee are the steering group for the sports project. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Gladstone Park Sports Club, London Marathon Charitable Trust and Football Association for help or funding towards this project. Our thanks must also go to Brent Parks Service for all the work they did in securing a £153,000.00 grant from the Football Foundation without which none of this would have been possible.

The sportd field refurbishment work is being undertaken by Land Unit Construction Limited.
